In the context of Keir Starmer’s announcement today that the first UK “Small Modular Reactor” will be built at Wylfa in Anglesey, this post from David Toke explains in detail why SMRs are
 
  • not “new technology”
  • not really small
  • not really modular
  • more expensive even than large-scale nuclear
  • could only be remotely commercially viable by drastic cuts in safety requirements
  • qualitatively more expensive than renewable energy sources
  • therefore a diversionary dead end being bigged up as a fantasy solution to avoid getting to grips with the reality of the problem.
